Portraits for NHS Heroes – Cowfold Artist Carole Rupniak
In June 2020, Carole participated in the “Portraits for NHS Heroes” where NHS key-workers receive a free portrait via a scheme instigated by artist Tom Croft, finalist of the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2018.
She was contacted by Evie, a Junior Doctor at Oxford University Hospitals who provided her with some photos, taken in her lunch break.
“This oil painting is a very meaningful piece to me, as I was humbled by her personal experience of these relentless times, and by her complete devotion to her work. A true NHS Hero!”
In September, Carole was delighted to have appeared on ‘BBC South Today’ (along with another artist Ben Laughton-Smith who also took part) to talk about her experience. Watch the programme below.

Portraits for NHS Heroes – Grace
Painting of ITU nurse Grace, for Portraits for NHS Heroes, a brilliant initiative started by artist Tom Croft in 2020 to raise funds for NHS Charities Together. Helen’s painting was selected to appear in the beautiful book for this project, published by Bloomsbury Press.
Helen says: “Grace is one of our hardworking nurses who has been at the frontline during this pandemic on a large and busy ICU unit. It was a real honour to paint her and so good and humbling to hear that this small contribution made a difference to her.”
Petersfield, Hampshire Hospital Nurse Grace says: “Thank you so much, it is absolutely stunning, just what I needed to brighten up my day.”
