About The Artist

I am a painter of vivid abstract seascapes and I am endlessly fascinated by the horizon and the symbolism it evokes. I paint from memory rather than life, recalling a special moment of time as my starting point. I love working with pure colour and my paintings are heavily influenced by the beauty of the natural world, particularly light on water at certain times of day. Together with horizons, my work has a recurring theme of time and an exploration of light and darkness through minimalism.

Music is integral to my work, inspiring my artistic practice and I always listen to music to get me in the zone when painting and feel this has a strong influence on the finished work. For me, music triggers memories and feelings and each painting is an emotional response to a sensory experience and an attempt to recapture how it felt to be in a particular place at a certain time.

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of dreamy folk music like Johnny Flynn, Martha Tilston, John Martyn and Sandy Denny. I think this adds an ethereal quality to the paintings and I often get lost in the music and don’t realise where the time goes. I always title my paintings from songs, with lyrics often jumping out at me while I'm painting that seem to fit the artwork perfectly. I feel that a snippet of a song lyric as a title gives the painting extra depth.

I studied for my degree in Fine Art at Brighton University and fell in love with the Sussex Coast. Now I live in Hastings and I find that the sea is a constant source of inspiration and subject matter.

Please visit my webpage for more examples of my work and for customer recommendations. I pride myself on excellent customer service and am always happy to help and answer any questions.

About The Artist

Francesca Apicella is a self-taught artist living in West Sussex, UK.

Inspired by strong feminine attributes, she creates classic portraiture with symbolic, geometric and natural elements.

Her work tends towards mixed-media paintings, composed of both oil and acrylic, among others.

Ultra-smooth wooden and metal panels are the chosen "canvas" for these art pieces, adding to the mystical, humanesque-like quality of the finished portrait. With the final piece uninterrupted by brush strokes and texture, this allows the artist to add minute details and a surreal-like finish that would have otherwise been unachievable.

Francesca has a background in 3D animation and studied Software Development for Animation, Games and Effects at the NCCA at Bournemouth University. This technical background has inspired some of the more mathematical and algorithmic elements of her work, whilst simultaneously incorporating classic portraiture techniques.

Francesca's Art Journey

Francesca was inspired to practice art after a long battle with chronic illness.

She was left completely bed-bound for 5 years and had to rely on others for everything. After various treatments failed, she turned to alternative therapies. One alternative medical practitioner advised her to return to one of her earliest passions, art.

What started as an uphill battle due to such severe allergies that required Francesca to paint wearing both a mask and gloves, turned into a beautiful escape into a world that was completely her own. Her first piece "Philautia", from the Greek meaning self-love, started off this adventure. The idea that physically creating something beautiful would help her appreciate being trapped in a body that didn't work properly. It was this piece that cemented the revelation that Francesca wanted to practice art professionally.

Each piece is a mirror of her journey, from "Serpentina", inspired from the ideas about progression and change, to "Aeonia, inspired by the ageless themes of infinite time and total freedom.

About The Artist

Based in East Sussex, Frankie is an alternative punk artist who draws inspiration from music, poetry and culture. Although early into her journey in the art world, her overall goal is to become a tattoo artist. Frankie uses art as a cathartic expression and shows the world through her imagination. Most of her artwork is pencil and pen work but she does also experiment with paints. Her aim is to create a space where humans who feel slightly different can take comfort and feel as though they aren't alone.

Frankie is autistic and hopes to speak up for the neurodivergent community through her expressive art which could hopefully make a change however large or small it may be.
