Working from my studio, I create Ink Paintings and Collages that convey my appreciation for the natural world. Inspired by the outstanding environment of Sussex and everyday natural 'treasures', my work depicts the local downland, forests and coastline and the shapes and patterns in flowers, fruit and shells. With lightfast inks, my paintings evolve using expressive, gestural brushstrokes and marks at my studio table, or working off the floor. I absolutely love using inks for their rich, sparkling colours - whether that’s with a brush, a blob or with a splatter and I continue to grow with every discovery.
Originally from Brighton, I studied at Eastbourne College of Art and Brighton Polytechnic/University (BA Illustration) in the late 1980’s and after a complete artistic break, I returned to painting in 2013 when I came back to live in Sussex.
My work can be divided into collections, each of which is quite unique and distinctive. My most recent series of work being my Framescapes in which the painting spills out onto and over the sides of the wood frame, making these as much 3-D artworks as as they are 2-D paintings. My wood panels series is a collection of atmospheric paintings of imagined places, but inspired by living in Sussex. My decorative collages are a series of mixed media artworks, in which I use my ink paintings and decorative papers as the means of telling a story.
I have been a member of the Chalk Gallery, artist-run cooperative in Lewes since 2016 and was its Chairperson 2019-2020. As well as being part of the Chalk community, I regularly participate in shows and exhibitions in and around Sussex and occasionally run Workshops on Collage.
My favourite Bluebell stream in Ashdown Forest, and just a short walk from my studio in Nutley.

I'm a Pastel Landscape Artist based in Ashdown Forest (between East Grinstead and Uckfield) in East Sussex. I specialise in views of Ashdown Forest and the wider Sussex countryside and have been producing art and picture framing, for the last 20 years.
Despite my Yorkshire roots (and occasional Northern outbursts), I have now lived in Nutley in the picturesque Ashdown Forest for the last 27 years – still not quite a local!
Ashdown Forest has always been special to me and I strongly suspect I would not have been an artist at all if it wasn’t for the inspiring subject matter right on my doorstep. Even on the gloomiest of days, there is artistic treasure out there waiting to be discovered.
Art is a pursuit I never expected to follow. I had previously trained as a bilingual secretary and worked in the power, marine and construction industries.
It all began on a February day in 1991 with an impulse buy of equipment and stock from a retiring picture framer. In search of customers, I joined a local art class run by Royal Academy - trained tutor, Geoffrey Colbourne. I soon realised there was a market for my work…
The next few years saw the business developing. Customer numbers increased and links were formed with the National Trust at Standen where I staged solo exhibitions and tutored day workshops. My range of limited edition prints and cards grew and I invested in the equipment to produce my own giclee images. I became interested in both the conservation and tourism side of Ashdown Forest and its villages, working with Elite Hotels (Ashdown Park), High Weald AONB Unit and local tourist attractions.
I joined the Ashdown Forest Tourism Association (AFTA) and Tourism South East. Being filmed for ITV's "Tales from the Country" with Selina Scott was exciting and I have also appeared on various public information films. I am reliably informed that my work has found its way to all corners of the globe and at last count I have sold over five hundred original paintings and several thousand prints.

Sheila Martin has been painting avidly for 12 years. She retired from being a chef 6 years ago and had been working in offices previously. Sheila lived in Kelvedon in Braintree Essex and attended various art classes and progressed from there, before recently moving to St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex.
Art is all about emotion, feeling and giving to others. It is such a wonderful thing to do to start from scratch and build up a painting for people to enjoy. So Sheila never did art for a living prior to retirement, but has been able to recently enjoy success and build a reputation to be able to hold solo exhibitions.
She likes to paint in all types of media, she uses pebeo golds and silvers, glitter and masking fluid. When she went to school there were never all these wonderful art colours and medias to hand. Flowers and forests are her main works.
I have a CRB and would like to take them for 2 to 3 hours on a lesson. I feel that what I do helps the brain to focus and stops boredom by painting pictures. I have been commissioned work by various people over the last 2 years
