About The Artist

Born in London, I moved with my family to Sussex when I was 17. After travelling a great deal, studying and painting around work commitments, I moved back to Sussex very recently with more time to devote to working with different mediums and techniques. I have now moved to Rutland in the East Midlands.

My paintings are owned privately in East and West Midlands, Devon, Hertfordshire, London and Sussex. I have taken part in exhibitions in Eastbourne, Seaford, Frodsham Cheshire, and Lewes. My work has featured in several prestigious exhibitions in Sussex as well as in the East Midlands and the Home Counties.

Paintings and Inspiration

My paintings are the blending of the representational and the abstract, mainly in acrylics or mixed media. I aim to convey the essence and atmosphere of a subject, rather than total realism and find the flexibility and exciting possibilities of acrylics and mixed media very well suited to this. I use palette knives, large brushes (and small), and experiment with textures and paint, as well as soft pastels and inks, in order to try to get the desired effect. I have recently also started experimenting with oils.

Inspiration can come from a landscape, city scene or the sea – or the texture of a stone or tree. Anything that would encourage the viewer to stop, look and think.

More information on prices, other paintings and upcoming exhibitions are on my website or give me a call.

About The Artist

I'm a Pastel Landscape Artist based in Ashdown Forest (between East Grinstead and Uckfield) in East Sussex. I specialise in views of Ashdown Forest and the wider Sussex countryside and have been producing art and picture framing, for the last 20 years.

Despite my Yorkshire roots (and occasional Northern outbursts), I have now lived in Nutley in the picturesque Ashdown Forest for the last 27 years – still not quite a local!

Ashdown Forest has always been special to me and I strongly suspect I would not have been an artist at all if it wasn’t for the inspiring subject matter right on my doorstep. Even on the gloomiest of days, there is artistic treasure out there waiting to be discovered.

Art is a pursuit I never expected to follow. I had previously trained as a bilingual secretary and worked in the power, marine and construction industries.

It all began on a February day in 1991 with an impulse buy of equipment and stock from a retiring picture framer. In search of customers, I joined a local art class run by Royal Academy - trained tutor, Geoffrey Colbourne. I soon realised there was a market for my work…

The next few years saw the business developing. Customer numbers increased and links were formed with the National Trust at Standen where I staged solo exhibitions and tutored day workshops. My range of limited edition prints and cards grew and I invested in the equipment to produce my own giclee images. I became interested in both the conservation and tourism side of Ashdown Forest and its villages, working with Elite Hotels (Ashdown Park), High Weald AONB Unit and local tourist attractions.

I joined the Ashdown Forest Tourism Association (AFTA) and Tourism South East. Being filmed for ITV's "Tales from the Country" with Selina Scott was exciting and I have also appeared on various public information films. I am reliably informed that my work has found its way to all corners of the globe and at last count I have sold over five hundred original paintings and several thousand prints.

My business, Cogcraft in Nutley, is my usual centre of operations and every available space has been commandeered. My passion for conservation also runs into the arts and I buy and sell antique prints, often rescuing them from unstable framing and acid-laden backboards. Visitors are most welcome and there is generally a pastel on my easel, but a phone call is very much appreciated. Please contact me to arrange a viewing.

Bert Tyler was a Forest Row builder – and a good one by all accounts. His bench is accessed from Townsends car park, west from The Hatch Inn at Colemans Hatch. The view is north, towards Forest Row and the North Downs.

A popular spot near Duddleswell, just off the Crowborough Road. You can just see the tops of the pines at Camp Hill Clump on the horizon. It’s a bit of a climb up the hill, but well worth it.
