About The Artist

Hello!

I'm Dawnie Thompson, a self-taught artist with a background of many creative projects achieved over the years.

With a growing passion for photography, loving all things nature, especially birds, I'm out and about everyday with my dog Sun (who's very patient with me), walking the inspiring South Downs or crunching over the pebbles here in Newhaven or its neighbouring beaches, admiring the everchanging sky capturing a sunrise or sunset.

Currently all works are originals only. Prints will be available upon request on all future art works... coming soon.

About The Artist

Based in Bedlington, Northumberland, I mainly paint in cold wax / oil mixed-media. For most of my life I have been painting and crafting in one form or another as a hobbyist. After many years working in IT, I now really hope to get my art into the big wide world.

My artwork is inspired by places I have lived and visited throughout my life. The colours, varying shapes of landscape from the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland, the South Downs in East Sussex, to the Peloponnese in Greece.

We had a touring motorcycle and travelled extensively on holiday for 20+ years across Europe.

From my perspective as pillion I could take in the varying vistas, the colours, architecture, vegetation. You could almost sense the essence of a place from the view from the back of the motorbike.

This has given me the inspiration and fired my creativity to create artwork now using cold wax / oils which Is a medium I find very flexible, to move the paint / cold wax across the paper or panels in a way I haven’t experienced before.

About The Artist

David has done a little painting for many years, but it is only in his recent retirement that he has begun to take it more seriously.

David worked professionally as a cinematographer, and was employed for thirty years at the BBC Television Film Unit. It is the skills learnt in his profession, of composition, perspective, lighting and colour that he endeavours to bring to his paintings.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, photography plays a large part in the inspiration for his paintings and he works entirely from his own photographs.
He can be inspired by almost any subject, but a lifelong love of the sea results in a strong bias towards maritime subjects.

David's preferred medium is water soluble oils on prepared board.

Art Groups / Exhibitions

Member of Fareham Art Group and Gosport Art Group. David exhibits at Titchfield Arts and Crafts Show.

About The Artist

I went to sea at 15 with the Royal Navy and came ashore again 12 years later having experienced typhoons in the Pacific, hurricanes in the Atlantic, the deep freeze of the Arctic and monsoons of the tropics; but such beauty everywhere.

Then after 3 years in commerce which was illuminating but boring, I became a Financial Adviser for the next 47 years, which on balance I found wonderfully fulfilling.

Even after all that time, salt water still flows through my veins but I love the dry land and all its surprises too.

I have had no formal training but had been painting in water colour on and off for about twenty years. After trying acrylics in about 2015 the bug bit: I had to become a painter!

Poems

Each of the prints of my original paintings comes with a thought provoking four line verse, written by Diane Cooke who has taught and inspired KS2 children for many years, with a special interest in developing their creative writing skills.

About The Artist

I have been painting watercolours seriously for over 30 years, initially as a facility to illustrate my own work as an Architect which developed into providing that service for others. An interest in the built environment, landscape and setting focussed interest of early paintings on buildings in landscape and townscape, inevitably leading me to a traditional taste in subject matter. Although such subjects from real life are still an inspiration, my work over the last ten years has been orientated toward effects of light and the development of a technique which captures this.

Subject matter is often the depiction of life ‘en plein aire’, instigated by the quality of light and form. To capture the moment, watercolour is the ideal medium and my approach has been traditional, even to the extent of not using white body colour (this is a personal preference, because of the ‘alien’ effect of body colour in a transparent medium rather than a criticism of those who use it). I also try to avoid the use of masque but this is mainly because the essence of ‘plein aire’ is usually a fleeting quality of light which does not allow the time necessary for the use of masking mediums.

Studio paintings are different, but even in in these circumstances I prefer to preserve white surfaces while painting or to lift colour in the process. I also tend to use natural earth colours as much as possible; this is partly because they best suit my normal subject matter but also because, unlike a staining colour, they can be lifted when dry to create ‘whites’. I also tend to use a heavy, rough watercolour paper as my support, which lends itself to techniques for manipulating colour including scratching to produce highlights.

One cannot practise watercolour painting and be unaware of the many great practitioners of the art, both alive and dead. One can admire some, such as John Yardley whilst recognising his approach would be impossible for me, whereas examples from John Blockley, Trevor Chamberlain, Lucy Willis and even Russel Flint and Rowland Hilder have all contributed to my own technique.

Art Groups / Exhibitions

I have occasionally submitted works to national exhibitions and have had works accepted on several occasions by the Royal Society of Marine Artists. This is valuable as a means of getting work seen by a wider audience, but the high percentage of sale taken by the gallery does not make this financially advantageous. I therefore prefer to exhibit where my work can be presented for what I consider to be a fair price, without the need to overprice to meet the gallery commission. I also provide watercolour tuition to local groups and occasional commissions.
