Helen is based in West Sussex, near the Hampshire border. She originally developed her painting practice through a love for depicting wildlife and finds immense pleasure in conveying life in her subjects. Human figurative work is also proving to be very satisfying, along with landscapes and still life. Please see her website for a fuller picture of her work.
Originally self-taught, she developed her painting techniques assisted by workshops, tutorials, books and most importantly, a lot of practice and observation. Keen to explore every aspect of her artistic self, Helen is currently taking a degree in painting at the Open College of Arts. She works in oils, acrylic, gouache graphite pencil, charcoal and pastels and often experiments with other mediums.
Helen's paintings have won Visitor’s Choice awards in local exhibitions; her work has also appeared in online exhibitions and her painting of a nurse for Portraits for NHS Heroes (2020) was selected to appear in the beautiful book for this project, published by Bloomsbury Press.
Member of Petersfield Arts and Crafts Society.

Imaginary landscape, based on Beachy Head, East Sussex view.
The sky is moody, the wind is strong,
The waves are heaving and rough.
But still the sailing boat ventures out
With sailors fearless and tough.

I went to sea at 15 with the Royal Navy and came ashore again 12 years later having experienced typhoons in the Pacific, hurricanes in the Atlantic, the deep freeze of the Arctic and monsoons of the tropics; but such beauty everywhere.
Then after 3 years in commerce which was illuminating but boring, I became a Financial Adviser for the next 47 years, which on balance I found wonderfully fulfilling.
Even after all that time, salt water still flows through my veins but I love the dry land and all its surprises too.
I have had no formal training but had been painting in water colour on and off for about twenty years. After trying acrylics in about 2015 the bug bit: I had to become a painter!

"Dear Chris,
We are delighted with our art website. In addition to all the items we requested, you have added many artistic details that really enhanced the site.
We would also like to thank you for your patience, explaining and talking us through all the concepts we did not understand.
It has also been reassuring knowing that you are on the end of the phone ready to answer our queries as they arise.
It has been a pleasure working with you.
Best regards."
"This is the second website that Chris and Colette from Surrey Artists have designed for me and I am delighted with the result. They put in an amazing amount of work collating a large amount of detail to ensure my paintings are professionally displayed.
The finished website has already attracted a large number of serious enquiries some of which have been converted"
