About The Artist

I am a Sussex-based stitch artist with a farm-based studio on the Sussex and Surrey border.

Mark making with thread has been fundamental to my art since my teenage years. Both free machine and hand embroidery are central to my work. Colour, and the lack of it, play vital roles. My machine embroidery is often monochromatic; I am very drawn to the black line of cotton thread on plain canvas although at times, if the subject matter calls for it, I will introduce colour. On the other hand, my hand embroidery explodes with colour and texture.

I am inspired by the wider environment and of that around me; from the back garden, local surroundings, photographs and images from around the world. A City and Guilds embroidery course led to Reigate School of Art and Fine Art courses, still using my embroidery skills.

Art Groups / Exhibitions

I was invited to join the ShedArt artist cooperative and have been a member ever since, exhibiting in many venues throughout Surrey and Sussex. Being amongst many painters, I have been enticed by the medium and found it to be a pleasant alternative.

I am also a member of an East Grinstead-based art group, Example, which has undertaken two Arts Council funded exhibitions within the local community.

“The word Philautia comes from the Greek meaning self love. Inspired by the ongoing battle with my health, I took to the creation of this piece. The idea that physically being able to create something beautiful would help me appreciate being in a body that didn’t work properly.”

About The Artist

Francesca Apicella is a self-taught artist living in West Sussex, UK.

Inspired by strong feminine attributes, she creates classic portraiture with symbolic, geometric and natural elements.

Her work tends towards mixed-media paintings, composed of both oil and acrylic, among others.

Ultra-smooth wooden and metal panels are the chosen "canvas" for these art pieces, adding to the mystical, humanesque-like quality of the finished portrait. With the final piece uninterrupted by brush strokes and texture, this allows the artist to add minute details and a surreal-like finish that would have otherwise been unachievable.

Francesca has a background in 3D animation and studied Software Development for Animation, Games and Effects at the NCCA at Bournemouth University. This technical background has inspired some of the more mathematical and algorithmic elements of her work, whilst simultaneously incorporating classic portraiture techniques.

Francesca's Art Journey

Francesca was inspired to practice art after a long battle with chronic illness.

She was left completely bed-bound for 5 years and had to rely on others for everything. After various treatments failed, she turned to alternative therapies. One alternative medical practitioner advised her to return to one of her earliest passions, art.

What started as an uphill battle due to such severe allergies that required Francesca to paint wearing both a mask and gloves, turned into a beautiful escape into a world that was completely her own. Her first piece "Philautia", from the Greek meaning self-love, started off this adventure. The idea that physically creating something beautiful would help her appreciate being trapped in a body that didn't work properly. It was this piece that cemented the revelation that Francesca wanted to practice art professionally.

Each piece is a mirror of her journey, from "Serpentina", inspired from the ideas about progression and change, to "Aeonia, inspired by the ageless themes of infinite time and total freedom.

Aeonia

The name “Aeonia” was adapted from the word Aeons. This is often associated with huge expanses of time, eternal truths and the ageless themes of love and revenge. The original piece was painted on a solid piece of aluminium incorporating infinite themes, such as a subtle bridal lace, silvery hair and mandala.

Inspired by celestial beings and the mythology surrounding the moon. Featuring a lunar-shaped stippled, mirror painted sphere around her head, hinting at the moon’s influences over the ocean, otherworldly makeup and hair the colour of the night sky.
